Harbinger of Summer

IMG_1040

Memorial Day often marks the “unofficial” beginning of summer. On some of our lower elevation rivers, the appearance of Smallies marks the “Ohfishial” beginning.  Today this chunky Smallmouth surprised us when it took a nymph intended for his trout-brethren.  A few good jumps and a worthy fight ensued, all leading to this happy first-time tenkara angler.  Don’t forget that tenkara isn’t just for trout.   Summer brings lots of warm-water angling opportunities and you’ll have a hard time matching the fun of an evening of tenkara fishing for these scrappy American gamefish and their warm-water cousins.
