We all know tenkara is fun and effective. But the simplicity, lightness and one-handed nature of tenkara also make it a wonderful tool for helping folks with disabilities enter and enjoy the sport of fly fishing. In early November, I had the pleasure of presenting a module on tenkara to Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing’s first-ever Handicapped Fly Fishing Instructors Course. The focus was on how tenkara might be of use to the wounded-warriors and disabled veterans who participate in PHWFF. I strongly believe it may be the ultimate “Adaptive Fly Fishing” technique. Please consider using tenkara, not just to enjoy fly fishing, but to help some other deserving person for whom it may be just the key needed to unlock the beauty, tranquility and therapeutic nature of our sport.
